EV ownership in Victoria has surged past 180,000 registered vehicles, and more Melburnians are pairing their cars with home charging than ever before. But here's what most "best charger" guides won't tell you: the right EV charger for your home depends heavily on whether you have solar, which inverter brand you're running, and what you want from your energy system.
At xTechs Renewables, we install five charger brands across Melbourne and Victoria — Zappi, GoodWe, Sigenergy, Sungrow, and Tesla — and not a single one is right for every home. This guide helps you figure out which one actually suits your situation.
Quick take — the one rule that matters
If you have solar and you don't buy a solar-aware charger, you're likely exporting your cheapest electricity at 2–5¢/kWh and then buying it back overnight at 30–40¢. A smart charger pays for the price difference many times over.
First: does your home have single-phase or three-phase power?
Before you even look at brands, this is the most important question. Most Melbourne homes and older Victorian properties run on single-phase power, which caps your charger at 7.4kW. That's plenty — it adds around 40–45km of range per hour and will fully charge most EVs overnight.
Three-phase power unlocks 11kW or 22kW chargers, but only makes a meaningful difference if your EV supports 3-phase AC charging. Tesla Model 3 and Model Y do (at 11kW). BYD Dolphin and Atto 3 don't — they're capped at 7kW regardless of your charger. Newer European models like the Porsche Taycan support up to 22kW.
To check: open your switchboard and count the circuit breaker rows. One column = single phase. Three columns = three phase.
The five chargers xTechs installs — and who each one is for
myenergi Zappi v2.1
The Zappi is the gold standard for solar-integrated home charging, and it's been proving itself in Australian conditions longer than almost any other brand. It doesn't just charge your EV — it monitors your home's energy flow in real time and throttles its output to match your solar surplus. Got 3kW of spare solar? It charges at 3kW. Clouds roll over and generation drops to 1kW? It dials back to match.
Three modes — Fast (grid + solar), Eco (solar-priority, tops up from grid), and Eco+ (solar-only, pauses if generation drops) — give you more granular control than any other charger we stock. It works with any inverter brand via its included CT clamp sensor, so you don't need to have a particular solar ecosystem to use it.
One caveat: the Zappi has a maximum operating temperature of 40°C, which is fine for Melbourne but worth noting if your charging spot is a north-facing wall with no shade.
GoodWe HCA Series (Gen 2)
If we've installed a GoodWe inverter or battery at your home, this is a very compelling add-on. The HCA series integrates directly into the GoodWe SEMS+ monitoring platform, giving you a single dashboard for your solar generation, battery charge level, and EV charging — all in one place.
It's also one of the most affordable chargers on this list, with the 7kW model coming in around $840. The IP66 weatherproofing is the best of any charger we carry — genuinely suited for fully exposed outdoor mounting. OCPP 1.6 is included, and a 3-year extended parts warranty is available as an add-on, taking total coverage to 5 years.
The limitation to know: solar surplus charging only works when a GoodWe battery is part of the system. Without it, you can still schedule charging, but it won't dynamically follow your solar output.
Sigenergy Sigen AC EV Charger
The Sigenergy AC charger offers an almost unreasonable amount for the price. At $1,200 for the 7kW model, you get open OCPP 1.6 (configurable to any backend including Home Assistant), CT clamp solar integration that works with any inverter brand, dynamic load management, IP65 weatherproofing, and a 3-year warranty. No other charger we stock packages all of those features at that price.
For homes with a SigenStor battery system, the 25kW DC Fast Charger module takes things further — it's the only genuinely fast home DC charger available in Australia, adding up to 100km+ of range per hour. It's also bidirectional, meaning it's ready for Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) once that OTA update lands from Sigenergy. It's a serious product for energy-forward households.
One important note for coastal Melbourne suburbs: Sigenergy's warranty is void for installations within 500m of the coastline — so flag this for jobs in Bayside, Brighton, Mornington, or anywhere close to Port Phillip Bay.
Sungrow AC22E
If your home is already running a Sungrow hybrid inverter, the AC22E is a standout choice. It integrates natively with iSolarCloud, Sungrow's monitoring platform, giving you unified control of solar, battery, and EV charging through one app. At $999 for a charger configurable between 7.4kW, 11kW, and 22kW output, it's exceptional value.
The AC22E also carries OCPP 1.6j support — an improvement over the older AC007E and AC011E models — and has an operating temperature range of −30°C to 50°C, so it handles everything Melbourne's weather can throw at it. Dynamic load management is built in.
The limitation: advanced solar charging features are dependent on having a Sungrow hybrid inverter connected to iSolarCloud. If your solar system is a different brand, basic scheduling still works but you won't get real-time solar surplus diversion.
Tesla Wall Connector Gen 3
The Tesla Wall Connector doesn't try to do everything — and that's exactly why it works so well. At $750–$850, it's the most affordable quality charger we carry. One unit covers both single-phase and three-phase installations, auto-adapting to whatever power supply your home has. The 7.3m cable is the longest of any charger we stock, which is a genuine practical advantage for tricky garage layouts.
What often surprises customers is that the 4-year residential warranty is class-leading at this price. And despite the Tesla branding, it works with every modern EV in Australia via the standard Type 2 connector — BYD, Hyundai, Kia, Polestar, BMW, all of them.
The honest limitation: no OCPP, no load management, and solar integration only works if you also have a Tesla Powerwall. If you have rooftop solar with any other inverter — GoodWe, Sungrow, Sigenergy, Fronius — the Wall Connector will still charge your car, but it can't automatically track your solar surplus and throttle accordingly. For solar-owning households, one of the smart chargers above will deliver better long-term economics.
Also important for commercial customers: the warranty drops to just 12 months for commercial installations.

What does EV charger installation cost in Melbourne?
Installed costs (charger + dedicated circuit + RCD + labour) typically run:
- Single-phase 7kW: $1,200 – $2,200 all-in
- Three-phase 22kW: $2,500 – $4,500 all-in
- Switchboard upgrade (if needed): $800 – $2,500 additional
The variation is driven by cable run distance from your switchboard to the charger, whether your switchboard needs upgrading, and your property type (newer outer-suburb homes tend to be the most straightforward).
Why buy and install through the same company?
It's tempting to buy a charger online and hire a separate electrician to install it. We'd gently caution against this. When the hardware and installation are supplied by the same company, you have a single point of accountability — one phone call if something goes wrong, no he-said-she-said between a supplier and an installer on whose fault a fault is.

If you have solar, a solar-aware charger pays for itself in avoided grid imports.
